Alcohol thermometers usually use kerosene (light oil) (alcohol was used in the past). Kerosene is transparent, so it is colored red or blue. Since the liquid tends to adhere to the inside of the glass, it is not suitable for precise temperature measurement. Commercially available thermometers usually have a range of -100 to +100°C. Those that use isopentane instead of kerosene can measure down to -160°C. Some thermometers use a mixture of pentane as the main component and can measure down to -200°C.
