Linen spinning - Asaitoboseki

Japanese:
Linen spinning - Asaitoboseki
In Japan, linen has long been made by spinning hemp (hemp) and ramie (ramie), but since the Meiji period, flax and jute have been used instead. Flax, whose thread and fabric are called linen, has been cultivated in Europe since ancient times because it grows well in cold regions, and France, Belgium, and Ireland are known as famous production areas. Currently, in Japan, flax is the main material used for spinning and weaving, depending on the characteristics and uses of each plant. The stalks of flax are soaked and crushed, and the fibers are combed using a hackling machine equipped with steel needles to make long fibers. The short fibers that are scraped off are called short fibers. The long fibers are spun using a continuous machine and a drawing machine, and then put into a fine spinning machine to make thread. The short fibers are spun using a process similar to that for cotton and wool. Ramie spinning (choma) uses chemicals to remove pectin and rubber before spinning. → Hemp → Related topics Spinning | Spinning industry
