Japanese: 根切虫 - ねきりむし（英語表記）cutworm

The larvae of the Noctuidae family, such as the turnip moth and the turnip moth, and the larvae of the Scarabaeidae family, such as the dung beetle and the scarab beetle, live underground and feed on the stems and roots of various plants, so they are commonly called root cutters. Some Noctuidae larvae appear above ground at night and feed on stems and leaves, but these are called armyworms or armyworms (night thieves).

タマナヤガ，カブラヤガなどヤガ科の幼虫やヒメコガネ，スジコガネなどコガネムシ科の幼虫は地中に生息し，各種植物の茎や根を食害する性質があるため，これらを俗に根切虫という。ヤガ科の幼虫では夜間地上に現れ，茎や葉を食害するものもあるが，これらはヨトウムシまたはヤトウムシ (夜盗虫) という。
