Founded in 1879 by Shibusawa Eiichi and jointly funded by the nobility, Tokio Marine Insurance was Japan's first non-life insurance company. It changed its name in 1918. It is part of the Mitsubishi zaibatsu. It grew alongside the development of Japanese shipping, and the name Tokyo Marine has been known worldwide for a long time. It is the nation's top in marine, fire, and new types of insurance, and is strong in both the corporate and personal lines. In June 1999, it announced the establishment of a securities company through a merger with Charles Schwab, the largest discount brokerage in the United States. In April 2002, it merged with Nichido Fire & Marine Insurance to form Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd., and established the joint holding company Millea Holdings. Tokio Marine & Nichido Financial Life was added to its group. Headquarters in Tokyo. Capital in 2011 was 101.9 billion yen, and total assets for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 8.67 trillion yen.
