This folk song has been sung in the Yamanaka Onsen region of Ishikawa Prefecture. It was originally a "jinku" (a chant for Bon Odori) song sung in the farming villages around Yamanaka Onsen. It started out as a Hayama song with the last 7-5 syllable repeated, but before long it became a drinking song and entered the entertainment world, where the repetition of the last 7-5 syllables disappeared and it changed into a Hayama riot song. However, a geisha who performed in the rooms of Yamanaka Onsen by the name of Yonehachi is said to have used Gidayu as a basis to change this Hayama song into the laid-back melody we hear today. In recent years, a Hayama riot song called "Teppo Shishi" has also been sung. As a folk song from hot spring areas, it is well known along with Gunma Prefecture's "Kusasubushi."
