An old town in Kurihara County, northern Miyagi Prefecture. The main settlement developed as a post town on the Oshu Kaido (currently National Route 4), and there is a bus connection to Osaki City and Kurikoma Kogen Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen. It is a small center of the nearby rural area, and the Tagaichi market, which has continued since the end of the Edo period, is still thriving. It produces rice, tobacco leaves, vegetables, and apples. In April 2005, it merged with Tsukidate Town, Wakayagi Town, Kurikoma Town, Hitasako Town, Semine Town, Uguisuzawa Town, Kanari Town, Shibahime Town, and Hanayama Village in Kurihara County to become a city, Kurihara City. 23.45 km2 . 4,510 people (2003). 宮城県北部,栗原郡の旧町。主集落は奥州街道(現在の国道4号線)の宿場町として発達,大崎市,東北新幹線くりこま高原駅とバス連絡がある。付近農村地帯の小中心で,江戸末期から続く互市(たがいち)は今も盛ん。米,葉タバコ,野菜,リンゴを産する。2005年4月栗原郡築館町,若柳町,栗駒町,一迫町,瀬峰町,鶯沢町,金成町,志波姫町,花山村と合併し市制,栗原市となる。23.45km2。4510人(2003)。
