An old town in Minamiaizu County, located in the southwest of Fukushima Prefecture, in the Okawa basin upstream of the Agano River (Agano River). Tajima, which is the center of the Aizu Railway, developed as a castle town of Shigiyama Castle, which belonged to the Naganuma clan, in the late Middle Ages, and as the location of the magistrate's camp in the early modern period, as a post town on the Nikko Kaido road that crossed the Sanno Pass and led to Shimotsuke. There are extensive forests, and the lumber industry is thriving. There is Komado Marsh (a natural monument). Aizu Kogen Ozeguchi Station is a connecting station between the Aizu Railway and the Yagan Railway. 福島県南西部,阿賀川(阿賀野川)上流の大川流域を占める南会津郡の旧町。会津鉄道が通じる中心の田島は,中世後期に長沼氏の鴫山(しぎやま)城の城下町,近世は代官陣屋の所在地,山王峠を越えて下野(しもつけ)へ通じる日光街道の宿場町として発達。山林が広く,木材産業が盛ん。駒止(こまど)湿原(天然記念物)がある。会津高原尾瀬口駅は会津鉄道と野岩鉄道の接続駅。2006年3月,南会津郡舘岩村,伊南村,南郷村と合併し町制,南会津郡南会津町となる。350.34km2。1万3449人(2003)。
