This is a type of root pruning used for the production management of plants and for the renewal of roots of garden trees and hedges. The purpose is (1) to suppress the elongation of the above-ground part of the seedling, (2) to concentrate the growth of lateral roots and fine roots to make the seedling more likely to take root, and (3) to generate new roots in the seedlings that have many roots and are in a root-packed state. In the case of (1), evergreen trees and vines grow vigorously, tend to elongate and are difficult to produce flower buds, so by root pruning, the nutritional effect of the roots, which have a strong ability to absorb nutrients and water, is suppressed. In early spring (February to March), a deep cut is made with a shovel or similar tool 0.6 to 1 meter away from the trunk (depending on the age and size of the tree). (2) cuts the lateral roots and also has the effect of letting air into the hardened soil and improving the root system. In addition, there is a method of root pruning in which the roots are lifted slightly with a shovel or similar tool to make the seedlings more solid. (3) is used for planting hedges and small shrubs. To help restore vigor, dig an area a short distance away from the trunk and add new soil or compost to encourage the growth of new roots. All of these treatments are carried out during the dormant period. For plants, a method called "root pruning" is also used for transplanting.
