Negishi Tanka Club - Negishi Tanka Club

A tanka poetry society. It was started by Masaoka Shiki at Shikian in Kaminogishi, Tokyo, as a practice of the waka innovation movement. It was originally called the "Shikian Poetry Society." On March 14, 1899 (Meiji 32), Katori Hotsuma, Oka Fumoto and others gathered, and as the number of meetings increased, it became a substantial association movement. The following year, 1900, it reached its peak with the participation of Ito Sachio and Nagatsuka Takashi, and their poems were published in various magazines such as the newspaper "Nihon" and "Kokoro no Hana" until the founding of "Ashibi" after Shiki's death. It respected Manyo and advocated sketching, which led to conflict with Shinshisha, but its realism was inherited by "Ashibi" and "Araragi" through "Ashibi" and became a major force in the poetry world during the Taisho period.

Shikian
Masaoka Shiki's former home. Shiki, who suffered from spinal caries, lived here from 1894 (Meiji 27), and used it as a hospital room and study, as well as a place for haiku and poetry gatherings. The current Shikian was rebuilt in 1950 (Showa 25) thanks to the efforts of his disciple Samukawa Nezumi and others. Taito Ward, Tokyo ©Yutaka Sakano ">
