A protozoan of the family Calcarinae in the class Rhizopoda. It is found from Amami Oshima south through tropical regions, where it gathers in groups and attaches to the surface of seaweed and stony coral on the coast. In particular, dead shells are found in large numbers in the sand on the beaches of Taketomi Island in Okinawa, and are sold in small bags as souvenirs. The shell is about 1.5 mm in diameter, slightly bulging in the center, with six spines arranged radially around it. There are many tiny holes on the surface, from which thread-like pseudopodia are extended to attach to other objects and move around. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
