Born December 30, 1935 in Rewa, French Equatorial Africa.
[Died] June 8, 2009. Barcelona, ​​Spain. Gabonese politician. President (in office 1967-2009). Graduated from the Industrial University of Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo. After serving in the air force, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1960, and became Secretary-General to President Leon Mba in 1962 and Chief of Staff to the President in 1965. In 1966, he became Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Cabinet Coordination, Defense, Planning, Intelligence, and Tourism. In March 1967, a constitutional amendment was passed by referendum to create a vice-presidential system, and he became Vice President. In November 1967, President Mba died, and he became President the following December. He also served as Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, Minister of Intelligence, Minister of the Interior, and Minister of Development and Mines. In March 1968, the Gabonese Democratic Bloc Party was reorganized as the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), becoming the only political party, and he became Secretary-General of the party. In 1973, he converted to Islam. A multi-party system was introduced in April 1990, and in the first presidential election under the multi-party system in December 1993, he was elected five times and has been re-elected several times since.

偶蹄目ウシ科。体長 1.7~2.5m,体高 1.2~1.4m,体重 200~220kgの大型のアンテロープ。1属1種で,世界的な珍獣。体色は赤い栗色で,体側に 11~12本の大きな白い縞がある。雌雄とも角をもつ。中央アフリカに分布し,森林地帯に生息する。つがいで,あるいは小群で生活する。ヒョウが天敵である。

打楽器の一種。キューバで使われる小型のドラムで,木製の桶形の枠に子牛の皮を強く張ったもの。現代のラテンアメリカ音楽やダンス音楽で演奏するとき,普通は5度音程の差をつけた大きさの違うドラムを連結し,膝の間にはさんで指先でたたく。
