Veranda (English spelling)

Japanese: ベランダ - べらんだ(英語表記)veranda
Veranda (English spelling)

A veranda around the outside of a building, adjacent to a room, with fully or partially open sides and usually covered with a roof. It may be thought of as a gallery-style porch or a covered balcony. The roof is often supported by a regular arrangement of columns, and the floor is paved with planks, stones, bricks, or other materials.

The word originates from the Hindi word barandah (meaning a portico), and refers to an extension of the living space inside a building to the outdoors. It is sometimes called a sun deck because it has handrails all around. In recent years, in Japanese architecture, verandas have been made wider and made like sunrooms, and are used as an extension of the tea room or living room, or as a play area for children or for growing plants. Generally, verandas are wider and have deeper eaves than wet verandas, so they are less exposed to rain and dew.
