A marine fish of the family Grouper in the order Perciformes. It is widely distributed in the tropical and temperate zones of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and is commonly seen along the coasts of central and southern Japan. Its body is pale pink or crimson red, with five wide horizontal bands along its sides. Many of its local names derive from this characteristic, such as Akagorou, Akadashi, and Akappe in Wakayama, Akaba in Kochi, Akamebaru in Kagoshima, Akauo in Nagasaki, and Akakai in Numazu. It is commonly seen in rocky and coral reef areas. It does not form schools, but usually lives alone. It is carnivorous, eating fish and crustaceans.
