This is a branch temple of the Otani-ha Shinshu sect (Higashi Honganji) in Chuo Ward, Osaka City. It is also called Minami Mido, as opposed to the Honganji sect's Tsumura Betsuin, which is called Kita Mido. In 1594 (Bunroku 3), Kyonyo of Honganji retired and handed over his position as chief priest to his younger brother Junnyo. The following year, he established a temple on the former site of Ishiyama Honganji in Watanabe, Nishinari County, Settsu Province, and named it Otani Honganji or Osaka Honganji. In 1598 (Keicho 3), it moved to its current location, and in 1603, the building was completed, which was called Naniwa Mido. The previous year, in 1602, Kyonyo was given a temple site in Shichijo Karasuma, Kyoto by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and established the Otani-ha Honganji (Higashi Honganji), so he made Naniwa Mido a branch temple.
