Moritoki Akahashi

The last regent of the Kamakura Shogunate. Some say he was born in 1295 (Einin 3). He was the son of Hojo Hisatoki of the Akahashi school, who had his residence near Akahashi at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. His mother was the daughter of Hojo Muneyori. In 1307 (Tokuji 2), he was appointed Sakon no Shogen (Left Left Middle Officer), Junior Fifth Rank. In 1311 (Ocho 1), he was appointed to the Hyojoshu (Councillor) without having served as a Hikitsukeshu (Person in Charge of Court Affairs). He subsequently served as Sanuki no Kami, Musashi no Kami, and Sagami no Kami. His highest rank was Junior Fourth Rank. He became regent in April 1326 (Karyaku 1). On May 18, 1333 (Ganko 3/Shokei 2), he led 60,000 troops of the Shogunate to defend against the forces of Horiguchi Sadamitsu, a general of Nitta Yoshisada's army, at Kobukurozaka in Kamakura. He learned that his sister's husband, Ashikaga Takauji (Takauji), had defected to the Shogunate, but he took his own life on the spot, thinking that he could not retreat because he was related to the Ashikaga clan and was concerned by the intentions of the regent Hojo Takatoki and others. His posthumous name was Jikoin Dohon.

鎌倉幕府最後の執権。出生年を1295年（永仁3）とする説もある。鶴岡八幡宮(つるがおかはちまんぐう)赤橋際(ぎわ)に居を構えた赤橋流北条久時(ひさとき)の子。母は北条宗頼(むねより)の娘。1307年（徳治2）従(じゅ)五位下左近将監(しょうげん)。1311年（応長1）引付衆(ひきつけしゅう)を経ずに評定衆(ひょうじょうしゅう)に就任。以後、讃岐守(さぬきのかみ)、武蔵(むさし)守、相模(さがみ)守を歴任。極位は従四位下。1326年（嘉暦1）4月執権に就任。1333年（元弘3・正慶2）5月18日、幕府軍6万を率いて、新田義貞(にったよしさだ)軍の将、堀口貞満勢を鎌倉小袋坂に防いだ。妹婿足利(あしかが)高氏（尊氏(たかうじ)）の幕府離反を知ったが、得宗(とくそう)北条高時(たかとき)らの思惑を配慮し、自分は足利の縁者であるから退却できないと、その場で自刃した。法名慈光院道本。
