Sakai developed as a port city from the period of the Northern and Southern Courts in the 14th century, and as it reached its peak during the Muromachi period in the 15th and 16th centuries, wealthy families with the backing of its economic power carried out several printing projects. These are generally called the "Asai-no edition," "Shōhei edition," or "Tenmon edition" after the name of the publisher or the year of publication, but they are collectively referred to as the "Sakai edition" or "Sakai version." Well-known works include Dosuke's "Shōhei edition of the Analects of Confucius" (1364), the reprint of "Complete Medical Books" by Asai-no, who was a physician, "Tenmon edition of the Analects of Confucius" (1528), "Asai-no editions" such as "Tenmon edition of the Analects of Confucius" (1533), and "Setsuyoshu" (1590) by Ishibe Ryōsaku, all of which were printed by wood engraving.
