In 1516, when Juan Diaz de Solis, the first Spaniard to explore the Rio de la Plata region, it is estimated that there were about 330,000 Indians living in what is today Argentina. Many of them were warlike nomads with a low cultural level. Solis himself was killed by the natives, and the city of Buenos Aires, founded by Pedro de Mendoza in 1536, was abandoned five years later due to conflicts with the natives.
