Japanese: コノハズク(木の葉木菟) - コノハズク（英語表記）Scops owl

A bird of the family Strigidae in the order Strigiformes. It is famous for its cry of "Bupposou" (a type of bird used for singing), and has been confused with another bird called the "Bupposou" since ancient times. Today, the Scops Owl is called the "voice of the Bupposou" for this reason. Its whole body is brown with scattered dark spots, the color of a dead leaf rather than a leaf. There are two types of this species: a gray type with a grayish tinge in the plumage, and a red type with a rich reddish brown color. These types are inherited, and are not due to differences in region, sex, age, or other factors.

フクロウ目フクロウ科の鳥。〈仏法僧(ブッポウソウ)〉と鳴くということで有名で，古来ブッポウソウという別の鳥と混同されていた。今日，コノハズクのことを〈声のブッポウソウ〉というのはこのためである。全身褐色で濃い斑が散在し，木の葉というよりも枯葉の色である。なお，この種には，羽色が灰色がちの灰色型と，赤褐色に富む赤色型の2型がある。これらは遺伝による型であって，地方，雌雄，老幼などの違いによるものではない。
