In French, it is called caprice, and can also be translated as rhapsody or fantasy. In Baroque keyboard music, it was used to describe pieces with a fugal character but a relatively free form. From the 19th century onwards, the name came to be used for short instrumental pieces of a whimsical nature, such as Mendelssohn's and Brahms' piano pieces. Paganini also used the name for an unaccompanied violin exercise, and there are also orchestral pieces such as Stravinsky's Capriccio for piano and orchestra.
