Ibn Ṭufayl

Ibn Ṭufayl
1105-85
Abubacer, a philosopher and physician in the Western Islamic world. Born near Granada and died in Marrakesh, he served as the court physician to the Almohad caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf for many years, and retired in 1182, handing over his position to Ibn Rushd. He left behind a number of medical books, but is especially known as the author of the philosophical novel Hayy b. Yaqẓān (the living one, the son of the enlightened one). The novel tells the story of an old man who attains philosophical wisdom through his own intellectual endeavours on an isolated island in the middle of the ocean, and a young man who escapes from another island, disgusted by the ignorant masses who are satisfied with traditional and conventional religions. The two men then visit the island to preach the truth to the ignorant masses, but discord and quarrels arise over the teachings of the two men, and the two men return to the island in despair.
