1816‐56 French organic chemist born in Strasbourg. He is commonly pronounced Gérard, but this is incorrect. He was professor at the University of Montpellier and the University of Strasbourg. He is the originator of the term "homogenous series." He noticed that the boiling point of compounds with similar chemical properties regularly increased with the increase in the number of carbon and hydrogen atoms, and he assumed that these compounds were built on the ( CH2 ) n structure, and attempted to classify them. However, this attempt was unsuccessful because the molecular structure was not yet known at the time. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
