French organic chemist born in Strasbourg. He is commonly pronounced Gérard, but this is incorrect. He was professor at the University of Montpellier and the University of Strasbourg. He is the originator of the term "homogenous series." He noticed that the boiling point of compounds with similar chemical properties regularly increased with the increase in the number of carbon and hydrogen atoms, and he assumed that these compounds were built on the ( _CH2 ) _n structure, and attempted to classify them. However, this attempt was unsuccessful because the molecular structure was not yet known at the time.

ストラスブール生れのフランスの有機化学者。一般にジェラールと発音されているが誤りである。モンペリエ大学，ストラスブール大学の教授を歴任。同族列という名称の創始者。化学的性質の類似した化合物において，炭素･水素原子の数の増加により沸点が規則的に上昇することに注目し，これら化合物が(CH₂)_nを基礎として組み立てられていると考え，分類を試みた。しかし，当時はまだ分子の構造がわかっていなかったので，この試みはうまくいかなかった。
