Echo comes from the name of a forest nymph in Greek mythology, originally referring to an echo. In room acoustics, this is called reverberation, and refers to reflected sound waves that have a time delay that can be distinguished audibly from sound waves that arrive directly from the sound source. In contrast to reverberation, the sound that reverberates throughout a room after repeatedly reflecting off the walls, ceiling, and floor is called reverberation. However, the two terms are often used interchangeably, and reverberation is often referred to as echo. In general, an echo device is a device that artificially adds reverberation to sound, and is also called a reverberator or reverb machine.

エコーはギリシア神話の森のニンフの名に由来し，本来は山彦のことである。室内音響では，これを反響と名付け，音源から直接に到来した音波に対し，それと聴感上区別できるような時間遅れをもつ反射音波をいう。反響に対し，音が室内の壁や天井，床などで反射を繰り返し全体に響く響きを残響という。しかし，用語の上で両者は混用されており，残響をエコーと俗称することが多い。一般にエコー装置とは人工的に音に残響を付加する装置をいい，リバーブレーターreverbrater，リバーブマシンreverb machineなどとも呼ばれている。
