Coastal Conservation

Japanese: 海岸保全 - かいがんほぜん

Protecting coastlines from damage such as tsunamis, high tides, waves, and coastal erosion. The importance of coastal conservation varies from country to country, but in the case of Japan, which is surrounded by the sea, it is extremely important. Not only have we enjoyed marine products from the coastline and used the ocean as a transportation route, but since 70% of the country's land area is covered by mountains, we have long carried out reclamation work to use the coasts as farmland, and since the Meiji period, and especially from the 1950s, we have carried out large-scale land reclamation work for the purpose of creating coastal industrial zones and developing cities.

津波，高潮，波浪，海岸浸食などの被害から海岸を防護すること。　海岸保全の重要性は，国によって差異があるが，周囲を海に囲まれた日本の場合，その重要性は非常に大きいといえる。海岸線を介して水産物を享受し，運輸の場として海洋を利用してきたばかりでなく，国土の70％が山地に覆われていることから沿岸を農地として利用するために古くより干拓を行ってきたし，明治以降，とくに昭和30年代からは，臨海工業地帯の造成や，都市の開発を目的として，大規模な埋立てを行ってきた。
