Ibn Tūmart

A Moroccan religious leader. He was a member of the Masmouda tribe, a Berber sect in the Anti-Atlas Mountains. He left his hometown in 1106 and traveled east from Cordoba to Mashriq, where he studied Ashari theology, Islamic mysticism, and the teachings of Ghazali. He returned to the Maghreb, full of passion for religious and moral reform, and founded a religious movement preaching the doctrine of Tawhid (the oneness of God). In 1121, he called himself the Mahdi and devoted himself to evangelizing the Berbers and overthrowing the Almoravid dynasty.

モロッコの宗教運動の指導者。アンチ･アトラス山中のベルベルの一派，マスムーダ族の出身。1106年に故郷を出発，コルドバから東へマシュリクに向かい，アシュアリー派神学やイスラム神秘主義思想，ガザーリーの学問などを学んだ。宗教と道徳の改革の情熱に充たされつつマグリブに戻ってからは，タウヒード(神の唯一性)の教義を説く宗教運動を起こし，21年には自らマフディーと称して，ベルベル人への布教とムラービト朝の打倒とに力を注いだ。
