Also called home range. A useful concept when trying to understand the spatial structure of an animal population. A term defined by W.H. Burt (1940) as "the residential area within which each individual animal moves for normal activities such as gathering food, reproducing, and raising young." This concept is mainly used for small mammals such as rodents, and includes the nest, which is the center of their life. Later, when this concept was applied to sedentary animals in general, there were cases where they did not have nests or it was difficult to determine which behaviors were normal, so the term came to be defined more broadly as "the maximum range of activity within a limited period of time of a sedentary animal."
