…Calligrapher. Born in Hikone, Omi. His given name was Tosaku, and his pen name was Shiyo. He was adopted by Kusakabe Saburouemon, a samurai of the Hikone domain, but his father died in the Sakuradamon Incident. In 1869 (Meiji 2), he moved to Tokyo and became the chief secretary of the Dajokan, but later made a living as a calligrapher. He first studied the calligraphy style of Maki Ryoko, but in 1880, he was influenced by Yang Shoujin, who came to Japan, and studied calligraphy of the Six Dynasties. He later traveled to China to study and broaden his horizons, and his deep knowledge and noble personality made his calligraphy a worldwide phenomenon.
