An old town in Imizu County in north-central Toyama Prefecture. It is on the east bank of the downstream Shogawa River, and the central settlement developed as a post town on the Hokuriku Road. Rice farming is thriving, and fruit cultivation and horticulture are also practiced. Muscat grapes and pears are local specialties. Roof tiles are also a local specialty. In November 2005, it merged with Shinminato City, Imizu County's Kosugi Town, Oshima Town, and Shimomura Town to become a city called Imizu. 21.77 km2 . Population: 12,763 (2003). 富山県中北部,射水(いみず)郡の旧町。庄川の下流東岸にあり,中心集落は北陸道の宿場町として発達。米作が盛んで,果樹栽培,園芸も行う。マスカットブドウ,ナシは特産品。瓦を特産。2005年11月,新湊市,射水郡小杉町,大島町,下村と合併し市制,射水市となる。21.77km2。1万2763人(2003)。
