An old town in Imizu County in north-central Toyama Prefecture. It is on the east bank of the downstream Shogawa River, and the central settlement developed as a post town on the Hokuriku Road. Rice farming is thriving, and fruit cultivation and horticulture are also practiced. Muscat grapes and pears are local specialties. Roof tiles are also a local specialty. In November 2005, it merged with Shinminato City, Imizu County's Kosugi Town, Oshima Town, and Shimomura Town to become a city called Imizu. 21.77 km2 . Population: 12,763 (2003).
