Dicotyledonous, polypetalous. Evergreen or deciduous Fuji-no-Tohon. Leaves are alternate, palmately compound, and lack stipules. However, the Decaisnea genus, found from China to the Himalayas, is a shrub with pinnately compound leaves. Flowers are unisexual, trisexual. Stamens are free, or fused at the filaments. Berries are relatively large, with several to many seeds. There are about 35 species in 9 genera distributed in Asia and South America. It is a family closely related to the Berberidaceae and Menispermaceae families, but does not contain alkaloids.
