...The story is about a sardine seller, Saru Genji, who falls in love with the courtesan Hotaru-bi, of Gojo Higashinotoin, thanks to his virtue in waka and renga poetry, and rises to success in life. Saru Genji is named after Hikaru Genji, so it can be said to be a folk version of the Tale of Genji. His father-in-law, Ebina Minami Amidabutsu, is a real person who appears in Zeami's Sarugaku Dangi, and Gojo Higashinotoin is home to a high-class courtesan, Takahashi-dono, one of the wives of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, making this a fairy tale that best represents the era. There are also one-volume and Tanryoku editions published in the Kan'ei and Shoho periods (1624-48), and two-volume editions published around the Kanbun period (1661-73) and Genroku period (1688-1704) periods. ...

…内容は，鰯売りの猿源氏が和歌連歌の歌徳により五条東洞院の傾城〈蛍火〉との恋を遂げ，立身出世するというもので，猿源氏は光源氏の名を踏まえており，いわば《源氏物語》の庶民版草子ともいえる。舅の海老名南阿弥陀仏は世阿弥の《申楽（さるがく）談儀》に見える実在人物で，五条東洞院には将軍足利義満の夫人の一人，高橋殿のごとき色好み(高級遊女)がおり，時代を最もよく表している御伽草子である。寛永･正保(1624‐48)刊の1巻本，丹緑版本もあり，寛文(1661‐73)，元禄(1688‐1704)ごろ版の2巻本も存する。…
