It is a species of antelope, also called the black wildebeest, blue wildebeest, or wildebeest. It is found in eastern and southern Africa, inhabiting the open savanna. It stands 1.3-1.4 meters tall at the shoulder and weighs 150-270 kilograms. Both sexes have horns, each about 65 centimeters long. Its body is gray, and its mane and tail are black. It usually lives in groups of 20-50, and prefers to eat young leaves and buds of the grass family in the morning and evening. In the dry season, it forms large groups of tens of thousands of animals, and migrates 50 kilometers a day, covering more than 1,600 kilometers to its destination. During the migration, it forms a breeding group led by a male. Its gestation period is 8-9 months, and one calf is usually born during the rainy season when there is a lot of young grass. Its lifespan is about 20 years. A closely related species, the black wildebeest C. gnou, is found in southern Africa. This species is small, standing 1.15 meters tall at the shoulder and weighing 130 kilograms, with long hair on its chest and a long, white tail. There used to be a large population, but overhunting brought it to the brink of extinction. However, it is now protected and has recovered to over 2,000 individuals.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱偶蹄(ぐうてい)目ウシ科の動物。アンテロープの1種で、ウシカモシカ、オグロヌー、ウィルドビーストともいう。アフリカ東部から南部に分布し、開けたサバンナに生息する。肩高1.3～1.4メートル、体重150～270キログラム。角は雌雄にあり、長さ65センチメートルほどである。体は灰色で、たてがみや尾は黒色。通常20～50頭ほどの群れをつくり、朝夕にイネ科の若葉や芽を好んで食べる。乾期には数万頭の大群をなし、1日に50キロメートル、目的地まで1600キロメートルを超す大移動を行う。移動の途中で雄をリーダーとする繁殖期の群れがつくられる。妊娠期間は8～9か月で、若草の多い雨期に普通1子が生まれる。寿命は約20年。アフリカ南部には近縁種のオジロヌーC. gnouが分布する。本種は肩高1.15メートル、体重130キログラムと小形で、胸に長毛があり、尾が長くて白い。かつては多数が生息したが、乱獲により絶滅寸前となった。しかし、現在では保護され、2000頭以上にまで回復している。
