Miyazuhime

Japanese: 宮簀媛 - みやずひめ

According to the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, she was the wife of Yamato Takeru no Mikoto. She was the ancestor of the kuni no miyatsuko of Owari (Aichi Prefecture). Yamato Takeru became engaged to Hime on the way to the east, and on the way back, he entered her house to marry her as promised, but Hime began her period. When Takeru sang, "I thought I would sleep with you, but the moon rose on the hem of your garment," Hime responded with a quick response, "The moon rose on the brocade of the garment I wore, unable to wait for you." These are rare songs that describe the female menstrual cycle. After this, the marriage was consummated, and Takeru left the Kusanagi sword, which he had received from the Saigū of Ise, with Hime and went to Mt. Ibuki, never to return (Kojiki). Atsuta Shrine (Atsuta Ward, Nagoya City) is said to have originated when Miyazuhime enshrined this sword.

『古事記』『日本書紀』によれば,日本武尊(ヤマトタケルノミコト)の妃。尾張(愛知県)の国造の祖。ヤマトタケルが,東征の往路で婚約し,復路にその約に従って結婚するために媛の家に入ったところ,媛は月経をむかえてしまう。尊が「さ寝むと吾は思へど汝が著せる襲の襴に月立ちにけり(あなたと契ろうと思っていたのに,あなたの衣のすそに月が出てしまった)」と歌うと,媛は「君待ち難に我が服せる襲の襴に月立たなむよ(あなたを待ちきれずに月が登ったのですわ)」と即妙に歌い返した。これらは女性の生理を詠んだ希少な歌謡群でもある。この後婚姻は成立し,尊は伊勢の斎宮より拝領した草那芸剣を媛のもとに置いて伊吹山に出かけるが,そのまま帰らぬ人となった(『古事記』)。熱田神宮(名古屋市熱田区)は,この剣を宮簀媛が奉斎したことがその起こりとなったという。
