Itten (English spelling) Johannes Itten

Swiss painter and creative educator. After studying in Geneva and Bern, he became a painter. In 1919, he was invited by Gropius to teach the foundation course at the Bauhaus in Weimar. Although he had an effective teaching philosophy for awakening students' creativity, his tendency towards mysticism at the time was at odds with the Bauhaus's policies, and he left the Bauhaus in 1923. He then devoted himself to creative education in Berlin and Zurich, and wrote books such as "The Art of Color" (1961) and "Foundation Course at the Bauhaus" (1963).

スイスの画家、造形教育家。ジュネーブやベルンで学業を修めたのち、画家となる。1919年、グロピウスに招かれてワイマールのバウハウスで基礎コースの指導にあたった。学生の創造力を目覚めさせるのに有効な指導理念をもっていたが、当時多分に神秘的な傾向を強めたため、バウハウスの方針と相いれず、23年バウハウスを去った。その後、ベルリンやチューリヒで造形教育に専念、『色彩の芸術』（1961）、『バウハウスの基礎コース』（1963）などの著作もある。
