Subaltern studies

It began in the early 1980s as a movement to rewrite the history of the Indian nation, and is an attempt at research on how to incorporate subordinate groups that had been excluded from the mainstream of national history into national history as an independent political sphere. Borrowing a term from Gramsci, the subordinate groups were called subalterns. Subaltern research, which began with Marxist historians, used the category of subaltern rather than proletariat because the groups that had been ignored in the mainstream of Indian national history were diverse and could not be fully encompassed by a category like proletariat.

1980年代初めにインドにおける国民史の書換えの運動として始まり，それまで国民史の本流から排除されていた従属諸集団を，自主的な政治領域として国民史にいかに取り込むのかを課題とした研究の試み。従属的諸集団は，グラムシの用語を借りてサバルタンと呼ばれた。マルクス主義歴史家たちの始めたサバルタン研究が，プロレタリアートではなく，サバルタンという範疇を用いたのは，インド国民史の本流から黙殺されてきた集団が多様なあり方をしており，プロレタリアートといった範疇では包摂しきれなかったためだと考えられる。
