<br /> This keyhole-shaped tumulus is located at the top of Mount Wakakusa in Kasugano-cho, Nara City, Nara Prefecture, at an altitude of 341.8m. Its total length is 103m, its circular mound diameter 61m, and its front width approximately 50m. It is said that this tumulus is the "Uguisu no Misasagi" (nightingale), which appears in "The Pillow Book," and a stone monument reading "Uguisu no Misasagi" (nightingale tomb), erected in 1733 (Kyoho 18), stands on the top of the circular mound. The side of the tumulus faces the plain, and roofing stones and cylindrical haniwa ( clay figures ) can be seen. Some of these cylindrical haniwa are circular around the top of the circular mound, while others are lined up in two straight lines from the front to the narrowest part. Other haniwa in the shape of a boat or a house were also excavated, and a small inner-line floral pattern mirror and a talc axe were excavated from the southwest corner of the front part. Considered important for understanding the development of keyhole-shaped tumuli, it was designated a national historic site in 1936 (Showa 11). Since then, it has been maintained and repaired as part of Nara Park, with improvements such as laying grass, installing protective fences, signposts, and information boards. It is about a 30-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station on the Kintetsu Nara Line. Source: Kodansha National Historic Site Guide Information |
