A family of violin makers active in Cremona, Italy. The founder of the family, Andrea (1505/1510-1577/1580), created the modern violin model, and through his sons Antonio and Girolamo, Girolamo's son Nicola Amati (1596-1684) created the perfect artistic violin. Nicola unified the strengths of his fathers' works and produced many famous instruments known as "Great Amati", which were small but well-balanced and had expressive tones. His pupils included the great master A. Stradivari and many others, such as A. Guarneri, who formed the Cremona school, and whose influence extended to Milan, Naples, Bologna, Venice, and other cities. The Amati family ended with Nicola's son Girolamo.
