A general term for birds of the Columbidae family. They range in size from the size of a sparrow to the size of a chicken. There are about 300 species distributed worldwide. They are divided into rock doves, green pigeons, crested pigeons, and bill pigeons. They feed mainly on grains and nuts on the ground or in trees. The chicks are raised on pigeon milk secreted by the parents. Wild pigeons in Japan include the Oriental Turtle Dove, Green Pigeon, Japanese Turtle Dove, and Grey Collared Dove. The rock pigeons often seen at shrines are also called house pigeons or turtle doves, and were bred from the rock pigeon that lives in southern Asia. → Homing pigeon
