Aogeito - Aogeito

A large annual plant of the Amaranthaceae family (APG classification: Amaranthaceae). The stem is 1-2 meters tall, thick, pubescent, and branched. The leaves are diamond-shaped, ovate, and long-stalked. Flowering season is August-September. The female flower's tepals are spatulate, 2-3 mm long, altogether white, with a rounded or slightly concave tip, and longer than the caryopsis. A naturalized plant native to tropical America, it grows from Hokkaido to Okinawa. Another naturalized plant native to tropical America, A. hybridus L. ( A. patulus Bertol.), has lanceolate tepals that are 1.5-2 mm long and shorter than the caryopsis. Recently, it has become more commonly seen than Amaranth.

ヒユ科（APG分類：ヒユ科）の大形の一年草。茎は高さ1～2メートル、肥厚し、軟毛があり、分枝する。葉は菱形(ひしがた)状卵形で長柄がある。花期は8～9月。雌花の花被片(かひへん)はへら形で長さ2～3ミリメートル、白膜質で先は円いか、ややへこみ、胞果より長い。熱帯アメリカ原産の帰化植物で、北海道から沖縄に生育する。同じ熱帯アメリカ原産で帰化植物のホソアオゲイトウA. hybridus L.（A. patulus Bertol.）は花被片は披針(ひしん)形で長さ1.5～2ミリメートル、胞果より短い。最近ではアオゲイトウより普通にみられる。
