720‐756 A scribe (Khatib) for the Abbasid caliph Mansur. He translated the Sanskrit animal fable Panchatantra into medieval Persian under the name Kalila and Dimna, and Sassanid court literature into Arabic. He also wrote original ethical and moral treatises and political treatises. He was of Iranian noble descent and converted to Islam in his later years, but was executed on suspicion of being a Zandakatist who believed in Zoroastrianism and Manichaeism.
