1334‐1405 Egyptian historian from the Mamluk period. Born into a distinguished family in Cairo, he studied folklore and history, then worked as a notary and then as a preacher at the Muizziya School. He devoted himself to historical research and wrote a large work, History of the Dynasties and Kings, which he left unfinished. Not bound by sectarian sentiments, he made extensive use of the works of Shiite and Christian historians, and is notable for his liberal use of the slang of the time.
