Layered hairpin worm - Layered hairpin worm

A general term for marine animals of the genus Hydroides , family Serpulidae, order Polychaeta, class Annelida. They attach to coastal reefs and live in white calcareous tubes. Their body is divided into the gill crown, thorax, and abdomen. The gill crown has several to several dozen pairs of gill filaments and one or two stalks, with a operculum at the end. The operculum consists of two cup-shaped bodies stacked one on top of the other, hence the name. The lower cup is funnel-shaped with 20 to 55 tooth-like projections on its margin, but the shape of the upper cup varies. The thorax consists of seven setal segments, the dorsal legs have winged needle-like setae, and the gastropod legs have comb-like setae. The abdomen consists of many segments. There are currently 13 known species of Hydroides in Japan, of which two species, H. ezoensis and H. fusicola, are found in areas from the Tohoku region to Hokkaido. The other species live only in waters influenced by the Kuroshio Current. The tubes of the Hydroides can extend upwards and form colonies up to 10 centimeters high, causing damage if they come into close contact with the waterways of power plants.
