Biloxi (English spelling)

A resort and tourist town in southeastern Mississippi, USA. Population 49,311 (1980). Located on a peninsula jutting out into Biloxi Bay, a tributary of the Gulf of Mexico, Biloxi is an important fishing town, canned shrimp and oysters, and shipbuilding town. A settlement was established in 1719, but it was just a small coastal fishing village until the mid-19th century. When yellow fever became widespread in New Orleans and Mobile in the 1850s, Biloxi became a resort town. The town developed after the railroad was connected between Mobile and New Orleans in 1870, and seafood and lumber could be transported there.

アメリカ合衆国ミシシッピ州南東部の保養･観光都市。人口4万9311(1980)。メキシコ湾の支湾ビロクシ湾に突き出た半島に位置し，漁業，エビやカキの缶詰業，造船業が盛んである。1719年に集落が建設されたが，19世紀中ごろまでは沿岸の小さな漁村にすぎなかった。1850年代にニューオーリンズとモビールで黄熱病がまんえんすると，ビロクシは保養地になった。70年モビールとニューオーリンズに鉄道が通じ，海産物や木材が輸送されるようになってから町が発展した。
