Under the tutelage of his father, a book dealer in Baghdad, he became familiar with Arabic manuscripts from an early age while studying Islamic studies. The Kitāb al-fihrist was intended as a comprehensive catalogue of books written in Arabic up to 988, but it does not only cover Islamic studies, but also covers Judaism, Christianity, Manichaeism, Hinduism, etc., and these sections in particular go beyond a bibliography and express the author's own unique views.
