Also known as Nadim. Author of the Kitāb al-fihrist, completed in 988. Under the tutelage of his father, a book dealer in Baghdad, he became familiar with Arabic manuscripts from an early age while studying Islamic studies. The Kitāb al-fihrist was intended as a comprehensive catalogue of books written in Arabic up to 988, but it does not only cover Islamic studies, but also covers Judaism, Christianity, Manichaeism, Hinduism, etc., and these sections in particular go beyond a bibliography and express the author's own unique views.

ナディームとも呼ばれる。988年に完成された《目録の書Kitāb al‐fihrist》の著者。バグダードで書籍業を営む父の薫陶で幼少時からアラビア語写本に親しむかたわら，イスラム諸学を修めた。《目録の書》は，988年までにアラビア語で著された書物の総合目録を意図したものであるが，イスラム諸学に限らず，ユダヤ教，キリスト教からマニ教，ヒンドゥー教等にも及び，とくにこれらの部分では文献目録を超え，著者独自の見解が述べられている。
