The Rebellion of Yi Yi

Japanese:
The Rebellion of Yi Yi
In China, in 1262 (3rd year of the Zhongtong era), Li Wei (?-1262), a Han Marquis of Shandong who had connections to the Southern Song, defected to the Yuan dynasty. Li Wei was from Wei County, Shandong Province, and his courtesy name was Songshou. His father, Li Quan, rose from being the leader of a band of thieves that arose during the unrest caused by the Mongol invasion of the Jin Dynasty in the early 13th century, and skillfully mediated between the intertwining forces of the Jin, Mongol, and Southern Song to build the greatest power in Shandong. Later, he became too confident in his power and invaded the Southern Song, where he was defeated and killed in Yangzhou (1231). Li Wen, who succeeded him after the defeat, remained subservient to the Mongols for the next 30 years, but spent most of his time trying to regain his own power. During that time, he was attracted by the profits of smuggling with the Southern Song, which he engaged in in violation of national bans. As a result, he took advantage of the internal strife in the Mongol Empire following the accession to the throne of Emperor Shizu of the Yuan Dynasty and responded to the instigation of Li Zong of the Southern Song, who was plotting to recover his native land.
