An annual grass of the grass family (illustration) that grows in low-lying, sunny wetlands such as the edges of rice paddies and the banks of rivers. The stems rise from a root with fibrous roots, branch at the bottom, and grow clump-like, 30-50 cm tall, thin, somewhat soft, smooth, and hairless. The leaves are linear and soft, 10-20 cm long and 2-6 mm wide, dark green, sometimes slightly tinged purple. From summer to autumn, a single spike-like inflorescence is produced at the top of the stem. The inflorescence is cylindrical, 6-12 cm long, 5-7 mm wide, dark green with a slight purplish tint, and densely packed with numerous spikelets.
