Belgian-born American chemist. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, he studied at the Catholic University of America, receiving his doctorate in 1904. He was professor of botany (1904-18) and organic chemistry (18) at Notre Dame. His doctoral thesis was on the reactions of acetylene, but he continued his research and in 1928 succeeded in synthesizing an acetylene derivative using a mixture of cuprous chloride and ammonium chloride (Newland's catalyst). This discovery later led to the production of synthetic rubber (neoprene) by DuPont.

ベルギー生れのアメリカの化学者。ノートルダム大学卒業後，アメリカのカトリック大学で学び，1904年学位取得。ノートルダム大学植物学教授 (1904～18) ，有機化学教授 (18) 。学位論文はアセチレンの反応に関するものであったが，その後もこの研究を続け，28年，塩化第一銅と塩化アンモニウムの混合物 (ニューランド触媒) を用いてアセチレン誘導体の合成に成功した。この発見はのちにデュポン社による合成ゴム (ネオプレン) の製造を導いた。
