Sumerian god of wind and storm. Along with the heavenly god An and the water god Ea, he was considered to be one of the supreme gods and ruler of the earth. Later, during the Akkadian period (c. 2350-c. 2150 BC), when the Sumerian religious system was adopted by the Semites, Enlil came to be called simply "Bel", meaning "Lord", but he was widely revered throughout Mesopotamia until the Babylonian god Marduk gained dominance. His center was Ekur (meaning mountain dwelling) in Nippur in southern Mesopotamia, and his contrapositive was Ninlil (Nin indicates that he was a goddess) or Ninhursag (meaning mountain goddess).
