〘noun〙① A type of entertainment in a tatami room. The technique of placing a puppet on a go board and reaching in from behind to make it dance. Also, the puppet itself. ※Essays, Dokusetsu (c. 1724), part 2 "It's like Matsusaburobei standing and watching the go board puppet Benkei."② A type of dance. An entertainment in which child actors imitate the movements of puppets on a go board. ※Kabuki, Isshin Onna Raishi (1699), part 5 "Zemasuke Tayu and other members of his family became geisha and performed a variety of other arts."
