Inuwarabi - Inuwarabi

Japanese: イヌワラビ - いぬわらび
Inuwarabi - Inuwarabi

A fern of the Dryopteris family. 40-80 cm leaves grow crowded together on creeping rhizomes. The leaf axis is usually reddish purple. The scales are lanceolate, light brown, and sparse. The leaf blade is almost the same length as the petiole, ovate-oblong with a tapered tip, and herbaceous. Bipinnately compound, tripinnately deeply lobed. The pinna stalks are usually 5 mm or longer. The sporangia and intumescence vary from linear to hook-shaped, and the edges are irregularly uneven. It is distributed from southwestern Hokkaido to Kyushu. A variety with a striking reddish purple axis and white spots along the axis is called Nishikishida and is suitable for ornamental purposes.
