A general term for textiles produced in the areas of Yonezawa City, Nagai City, and Shirataka Town, Nishiokitama County, Yamagata Prefecture. It is said that the area already had a track record of producing silk floss and tsumugi silk when Uesugi clan regent Naoe Yamashiro no Kami Kanetsugu was lord of the domain in 1598 (Keicho 3). In 1767 (Meiwa 4), feudal lord Uesugi Harunori (Takayama) drew up a policy to promote industry in order to restore the domain's government, encouraging the cultivation of mulberry, paper mulberry, and ramie in the Nagai region. In 1776 (An'ei 5), a chijimishi (a craftsman who makes silk crepe fabrics) was invited from Ojiya in Echigo, who set up a manufacturing facility and had the skills passed down to the children of the household.
