Newlands

British chemist. He entered the Royal College of Chemistry in 1856 to study under AW Hoffmann, and after serving as assistant chemist at the Royal Agricultural Society, he became independent as an analytical chemist in 1864. From 1868, he worked as a chemist at a sugar refinery. In 1860, as his mother was of Italian descent, he temporarily joined Garibaldi's volunteer army and participated in the Italian unification movement. In 1864, he attempted to classify elements based on the integer (ordinal number) obtained by dividing the atomic weight of an element by a constant and the similarity of the element's properties. The following year, in 1865, he proposed the octave law, which states that if all 62 elements known at the time are arranged in order of ordinal number, elements with similar properties are arranged at every ordinal difference of 7, but this was not accepted. However, after DI Mendeleev's discovery of the periodic law (1869), he claimed priority of discovery and was recognized, and in 1887 he was awarded the Davy Medal by the Royal Society.

しかし,D.I.
